Founded in 1871, Colorado Springs, Colorado's second-largest city has evolved from a quaint, Victorian spa resort to a sophisticated city, with a charming "small town" ambiance. With over 50 attractions, Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region are the gateway to Southern Colorado's "Outdoor Adventure Play Land." The natural beauty of Colorado Springs is legendary. In fact, the view from the top of nearby Pikes Peak inspired Katharine Lee Bates to compose "America the Beautiful" over 100 years ago. Today, there is more access to the mountains and streams that the area is famous for, yet the Wild West feel remains intact.
At an altitude of 6,035 feet, the climate of Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region is warm in the summer and moderate in the spring, fall and winter, with over 300 days of sunshine each year. Classified as an "alpine desert," the dry, clean air was once a destination to heal tuberculosis patients. Today, residents enjoy the climate because it allows for year-round outdoor recreation, and there is more recreation that you could ever dream in this part of the country. Summers are dry with temperatures in the 80s to mid 90s, with cool nights in the 60s. Spring and fall temperatures range from the mid 50s to the low 70s and winters here can be white, but normally the snow that does fall melts quickly and reveals a sunny sky again. Winter temperatures range from the low 30s to upper 40s.
For decades this part of Colorado east of Colorado Springs has been the home to farmers and ranchers who make their living off the land and others who want a quieter existence, unfettered by the noise and congestion of city life. Today, an ongoing spirit of the West and the modern conveniences of new master planned communities, like Meridian Ranch and Woodmen Hills are blending to make it a unique and enjoyable place to live.
Meridian Ranch is a 2,500-acre Master Planned Community surrounded by a new world-class golf course, away from the stress of the city, yet close enough to be convenient. Strong community theme and standards, a planned recreation and family fitness center, a growing number of convenience shopping facilities and larger lots with great home prices add to the allure of the area.
Woodmen Hills is the largest development in all of Colorado Springs with many lots of 1/2 acre and 1 acre in size. Woodmen Hills' two recreation centers, open space areas, parks and trails are a strong plus. Many Woodmen Hills homes are on golf-course lots. Woodmen Hills residents enjoy the use of the two Woodmen Hills Recreation Centers. The YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region operates the facilities, which are owned by the Woodmen Hills Metropolitan District. Woodmen Hills monthly homeowner dues cover the membership. The Center West offers an outdoor swimming pool, and the larger, 12,000 square foot Center East features two indoor swimming pools, including a lap pool and children's pool, a cardiovascular exercise room, an aerobics room, locker facilities and a children's playroom. The YMCA manages programs for youth sports, childcare and aerobics.
Both communities are right on the Antler Creek Golf Course, a "prairie dunes style" course, at 8,100 yards from the championship tees, is the third longest course in the world! Five other tee locations make it so every level of player can enjoy this challenging new course. Three lakes, 73 bunkers and wide playable fairways wind artistically through the Meridian Ranch and Woodmen Hills communities. The restaurant, which also features a full bar, is open for lunch and dinner daily, and is also open for breakfast Saturday and Sunday.
Both communities sit 10 miles from Peterson Air Force Base via Highway 24 and a non-congested drive to Schriever Air Force Base and the Space Command Center. Numerous industrial facilities and business centers along Highway 24 and Powers Boulevard also provide many job opportunities. Meridian Ranch and Woodmen Hills are within 20 minutes of I-25 and the over 18 national and international corporations located along Highway 83 and the Briargate Business Campus. Residents find trouble-free commuting to almost any business center in the Pikes Peak region and even Denver.
The opening of a new Falcon Town Center, located near the junction of Woodmen Rd. and Hwy. 24, speaks well of the growth of the Falcon area. The center features a new Safeway store, a gas station and bank facility. Falcon also offers numerous other convenience shopping facilities. Access to Powers Blvd., about 10 miles away opens up a world of shopping opportunities. The Chapel Hills Mall, one of the regions main centers, is about 15 miles from Meridian Ranch.
Meridian Ranch homeowners enjoy trails and parks, perfect for walking and jogging. There's an extensive trail system throughout the neighborhood. The "Greens Park" features a basketball court, picnic pavilion, playground, BBQ area, grassy play area and walking path. The "Fairway Heights Park" features a playground, a low climbing area and a large grassy area. In Woodmen Hills, a trail system meanders through residential areas and interconnects with schools, parks and the golf course. The Rock Island Trail Head originates in the country park just south of Parkside at Woodmen Hills. Following the old railroad bed, this trail links up with numerous trails that go as far as Cripple Creek.
The Meridian Ranch Recreation Center is located at the corner of Londonderry Drive and Angeles Road. The facilities include a fitness and aerobics center, activity rooms, outdoor swimming pool with slide, graduated slope children's area and lap lanes. A new gymnasium provides a place to play basketball, volleyball, T-ball, and other fun activities. An indoor swimming pool is planned for the future. Residents of Meridian Ranch are automatically members of this recreation center. The YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region manages the pool, child watch area and cardio exercise equipment, in addition to initiating programs supported by participant registration fees such as youth sports, day camps, swimming lessons and exercise classes.
Both communities are known for providing country living with city conveniences. The area features full Front Range views and is set on the rolling grasslands that characterize eastern Colorado, with plenty of native cottonwood and aspen trees. Miles of open space surround the neighborhood to enjoy that famous Colorado outdoors.
